Act Now, Speak Out!

Health Care Speakers Training for Women & Girls

The Health Care Justice Act of 2004 (HB 2268) was signed into law last year by Governor Blagojevich. It creates the 29 member Adequate Health Care Task Force, which is charged with developing a comprehensive health care access plan. Public hearings are being held in every congressional district across the state with testimony presented to go into a final report to the Governor and General Assembly.

Please join us at one of two training sessions for women and girls as we prepare you to present testimony. We will provide you with policy recommendations to the current health care situation, updates on women and girls health issues, and the communications skills to effectively present your message.

Be a part of the process to achieve affordable and accessible health care in Illinois.

In partnership with Girl Talk and with support from the Girls Best Friend Foundation and the Lloyd A. Fry Foundation, Health and Medicine worked with young women inside and outside of the Cook County Juvenile Temporary Detention Center to develop a Bill of Health Rights for incarcerated girls.  The document, crafted entirely by girls, details at that point in time, the ten most salient issues affecting their health and well being. The Bill of Health Rights is a work in progress as we continue efforts to engage and empower young women intimately involved in the correctional system to address and explore the full range of their health needs.

Chicago Area Schweitzer Fellows

Focus Group Evaluation Report

Starting in August 2002 we conducted baseline and follow-up focus groups with the 2002-2003 and 2003-2004 Fellows.  We held nine groups including five baseline groups and four follow-up groups, with an average of five to six participants per group.  First, we wanted to learn more about what brings students to the Fellows Program, and the roots of their commitment to service, that is, to find out who the Fellows are.  Second, we sought to obtain the Fellows’ input on what works best programmatically, their suggestions for improving the Program, and the impact of the Program on their commitment to public service.
