| Health and Medicine is carrying out a two-phase
project to identify potential health consequences of welfare reform
and then to recommend policy and research agendas to study and monitor
these consequences.
Throughout 1999 and 2000, Health and Medicine undertook a project
examining the effects of the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity
Reconciliation Act (PRWORA) of 1996 on the health of Chicago's current
and former adult welfare population. The goals of the project were:
to examine health insurance coverage and access to health care
as former welfare recipients move from welfare to work; and
to explore health status and any changes associated with moving
from welfare to work.
Phase I: Background and Research; Phase II: Leadership Consensus
