The Chicago Forum for Justice in Health Policy: Creating A Health Equity Agenda for Chicago’s Elections
Dec 12, 2018On Wednesday, December 12, 2018 at SEIU Healthcare IL Member Hall Heath & Medicine held a meeting of the Chicago Forum For Justice in Health Policy to discuss what belongs on a Chicago health equity agenda as well as major barriers to health equity that our elected officials need to address. Participants were invited to provide both testimony that could be included in a Chicago Health Equity Agenda and to also share challenges to health equity in need of solutions.

The Chicago Forum for Justice in Health Policy: Housing Justice for Health Equity
Aug 27, 2018Health & Medicine is a part of the Chicago Housing Justice League (CHJL), a coalition of 37 organizations focused on advancing a set of principles for Chicago’s next five-year housing plan. The Lawyers’ Committee for Better Housing co-sponsored this forum with Health & Medicine. The forum provided an opportunity to hear from Chicago officials leading the planning process, learn about the principles of the CHJL, hear from advocates about in-progress development of the five-year housing plan, and to discuss how the health sector can be a stronger force for influencing equitable housing policies in Chicago.

Trauma-Informed Systems Initiative with the San Francisco Dept. of Public Health
Jul 26, 2018Organizations, like people, are susceptible to negative effects of trauma, including fragmentation, numbing, reactivity and impaired relationships. These effects in turn prevent staff from responding effectively to each other and to the people they serve. In this free webinar, Dr. Kenneth Epstein of the San Francisco Department of Public Health outlines the Trauma-Informed Systems Initiative (TISI) which is working to make SFDPH a more trauma-informed, safe, and supportive work environment and system of care.

The Executive Director of the National Domestic Workers Alliance, Ms. Poo is an award-winning activist, thought leader, social innovator, and a leading voice in domestic workers’ rights and family care advocacy.

Jun 25, 2018On Monday, June 25 Health & Medicine hosted a forum to share lessons from members of our Behavioral Health-Primary Care Integration Learning Collaborative. The Learning Collaborative has just completed three years of work, and released a Playbook that describes the knowledge gained from providers, advocacy groups, people with lived experience, and a managed care provider as we attempted to find a way to solve ongoing challenges to integration.

The Chicago Forum for Justice in Health Policy: We Can’t Gentrify Our Way to Health Equity
Dec 8, 2017Who has a right to the city? How does housing and community displacement destabilize communities and stand in the way of health equity? On Friday, December 8, 2017 at Loyola University Regents Hall, Health & Medicine hosted a forum--featuring keynote Chloe Gurin-Sands, MPH of the Metropolitan Planning Council--to investigate these and other questions. This cross-sectoral discussion connected people fighting against displacement and gentrification with people working in healthcare, public health, housing, and other sectors. The event work to position displacement prevention as a core public health agenda item, a necessary part of the process of achieving health equity.
Community Connections: Pathways to Safety, Healing, and Wellness
Oct 24, 2017On Tuesday, October 24 at the Chicago Teachers Union Foundation, the Illinois ACEs Response Collaborative welcomed over 150 community partners for an interactive day rooted in the resilience of our community. Communities offer a rich tapestry of ways to foster collective resilience. Community Connections highlighted some of the ways community groups and networks are building positive relationships and places of belonging and contribution. The conference provided attendees an opportunity to learn and share with others working to strengthen communities and promote healing and wellness. Topics included creative approaches that weave together arts, block clubs, youth development programs, community gardens, and story-telling with schools, health services, law-enforcement agencies, libraries, and community organizations.
The Chicago Forum for Justice in Health Policy: Police Violence as Public Health Data
Mar 17, 2017Structural racism, class inequity, and gender inequities evident in policing, arrests, violence from police, and in prosecution and incarceration all hinder health equity. On Friday, March 17 at Loyola University, Health & Medicine hosted a meeting of the Chicago Forum for Justice in Health Policy to explore how public health can utilize its expertise in counting police-involved injuries and deaths to aid in targeting prevention efforts and policy change to advance health equity.
