On July 26, 2018 at Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP, Health & Medicine Policy Research Group and the Chicago Area Schweitzer Fellowship presented the 2018 Schweitzer Leadership Award to Monica E. Peek, MD, MPH, MSc. The Award honors an individual who has done significant work to mitigate the social determinants of health in their community, and whose commitment to service has influenced and inspired others.

A physician, researcher, and teacher, Dr. Peek is Associate Professor in the Section of General Internal Medicine, the Associate Director of the Chicago Center for Diabetes Translation Research, the Director of Research at the MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics, and the Executive Medical Director of Community Health Innovation at the University of Chicago. Across her roles, Dr. Peek’s efforts focus on elucidating and addressing the myriad factors that perpetuate diabetes and other health disparities among African-Americans and other marginalized groups.
