Health Equity in Action: Our Strategic Plan

At Health & Medicine, we believe a just and equitable society is not only possible—it is necessary. In a time when public health is being politicized, underfunded, and misunderstood, we remain rooted in our mission: to build power and momentum for social justice and health equity in Illinois.

Our new Strategic Plan reflects a renewed commitment to that mission. It charts a path forward that is bold, thoughtful, and grounded in the wisdom of our staff, partners, and communities. The plan is the result of deep listening, honest reflection, and a shared belief that health care is a human right and that every person deserves the opportunity to thrive.

Structured around six core pillars, the plan outlines how to strengthen our infrastructure, deepen our financial sustainability, and sharpen our impact through research, advocacy, and organizing. It also reflects our continued commitment to anti-racism, community-centered solutions, and confronting the root causes of health inequity.

“This plan is more than a document,” says Margie Schaps, Executive Director of Health & Medicine. “It’s a living reflection of our purpose and our people—and we hope it inspires continued partnership with everyone who believes, as we do, that a healthier, more just future is within reach.

We know systems don’t change overnight—but we also know that change is possible when we act in solidarity, build collective power, and stay focused on our shared vision of a society free of health and social inequities.

Thank you for being part of this work. We invite you to explore the plan, reflect on what’s possible, and move forward with us.”
